Every generation likes to thinks it’s special, just a little bit “different” than the generations that came before. I know my generation, the baby boomers, sure did. Caught up in the unbridled optimism of youth, we thought we were so different that we were going to change the world.

I thought about this a few weeks ago while attending the Future of Entrepreneurship Education (FEE) Summit in Orlando, Fla. I met many driven young entrepreneurs under 30 who are determined to fix the mess the previous generations have made of the world (which kind of reminds me of what my generation used to think).

Don’t get me wrong. I hope they can do what we boomers couldn’t. And one thing this new generation, known either as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y, has going for it is the prevalence of entrepreneurs in the world today.

What are the big themes in American entrepreneurship this year? A bigger focus in universities and government, a shift away from high-tech, and a call for more women leading startups are just a few.

Spend a few days in the company of entrepreneurs, or devote a solid 12 hours to listening to educators and self-made businesspeople talk about ways to encourage entrepreneurship, and you’ll come away with a few conclusions. That’s what happened to me last week after spending three days in Orlando: the first two spent at a retreat for young entrepreneurs and the third at a summit exploring the future of entrepreneurship education.

The summit was typical in as much as it focused on sharing ideas. However, it was different from others in that it brought together both the traditional players in entrepreneurship education with some of those driving a few of the latest grassroots initiatives aimed at supporting aspiring growth entrepreneurs. The breadth of stakeholders is natural. As the Kauffman Panel on Entrepreneurship Curriculum in Higher Education concluded in a recent report, a canon or single approach to entrepreneurship education is unrealistic given the wide array of educational models, practices and institutional types. But it also made sense for another reason. It was clear to me that the older attendees—such as myself—had much to learn from the younger thinkers in the room as to what interventions and help are necessary to have impact.

What we used to think of as the “real job” world is quickly proving to be an outdated concept, and no one feels that more acutely than the educated Millennial.

As the nation’s economy continues to struggle, and the unemployment rate hovers in the 9 percent range, 16-to-39-year-olds have had to completely reconsider the way they approach the job market. And they’re increasingly finding themselves creating their own jobs by becoming entrepreneurs.
